Most backup and archive jobs read and write large files in sequence. They need capacity far more than processor time or random-access speed.
General-purpose plans pair small NVMe disks with plenty of CPU and memory, so storing a few terabytes means paying for several large servers. Object storage removes the size limit, but adds per-gigabyte fees, new tooling and egress charges every time you restore.
Storage VPS plans use enterprise hard drives with modest CPU and RAM, which keeps the monthly price low. You get a normal Linux server with root access, so rsync, BorgBackup, restic and Nextcloud install and run as they would anywhere, and 3 TB of monthly traffic covers routine syncs and restores.
