Telegram MTProxy on a VPS: Your Own Proxy for Telegram
Connect Telegram to your own MTProxy server with one link or by hand on desktop and mobile, then share the proxy with friends or a community.
MTProxy (MTProto Proxy) is a proxy server made by the Telegram team to get around blocks and censorship. It uses Telegram’s own MTProto encryption, so your messages stay as protected as they are on Telegram itself.
MTProxy carries Telegram traffic only; it is not a full VPN. That makes it very light, so a small, inexpensive server is enough for a whole group of users.
- Operating system: Ubuntu 22.04
- Minimum server: 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM and 20 GB of disk
- Proxy port: 443
Find your proxy link
When your server is ready, we email you its IP address, the root password and your MTProxy link. The same details are in your client area, under the server’s information. The link looks like one of these:
The secret in the link is what lets people use your proxy. Share it only with people you want to give access to.
tg://proxy?server=SERVER_IP&port=443&secret=SECRET
https://t.me/proxy?server=SERVER_IP&port=443&secret=SECRETAdd the proxy with the link
The quickest way: open the link on a device where Telegram is installed.
- Make sure Telegram is installed and running.
- Open your MTProxy link. If a web page opens first, click Apply MTPROXY Settings.
- Telegram opens the proxy details. Click Connect Proxy.
Add the proxy by hand on a computer
You can also enter the proxy details yourself in Telegram Desktop:
- Open Settings > Advanced > Connection type.
- Choose Use custom proxy.
- Choose the MTProto type.
- Hostname: your server’s IP address. Port: 443. Secret: the value after secret= in your link.
- Click Save.
Add the proxy by hand on a phone
On Android and iPhone, the proxy settings are in the same place:
- Open Settings > Data and Storage > Proxy.
- Tap Add Proxy and choose MTProto.
- Enter your server’s IP address, port 443 and the secret from your link.
- Save, then turn on Use Proxy.
Share the proxy
To give others access, send them your link. The https://t.me/proxy form opens in any browser and works well in chats and channels.
Everyone who uses the link shares your server’s traffic allowance.
Check the connection
In Telegram’s proxy list, a working proxy shows as connected, with its response time. On Telegram Desktop, a shield icon also appears at the top of the chat list. To stop using the proxy, turn off Use Proxy in the same settings.
