AmneziaVPN on a VPS: Self-Hosted VPN Set Up from an App
Install your own AmneziaVPN server straight from the AmneziaVPN app, with no terminal commands: connect the app to your VPS, choose a protocol, share access and fix common connection problems.
AmneziaVPN is a free, open-source self-hosted VPN that you install and manage entirely from an app on your computer or phone. Its default protocol, AmneziaWG 2.0, is an obfuscated version of WireGuard built to work under heavy censorship.
There is nothing to set up on the server by hand: the app connects over SSH and installs everything in Docker for you. Any of our plans running Ubuntu or Debian will do.
- Operating system: Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04, Debian 12 or 13
- Minimum server: 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM and 15 GB of disk
- What you need: the server’s IP address and root password
Get your server and login details
Order a VPS with one of the operating systems above. When it is ready, we email you its IP address and the root password; the same details are in your client area, under the server’s information.
You only need the IP address, the username root and the password. The AmneziaVPN app does the rest.
Install the AmneziaVPN app
Download AmneziaVPN for your device from amnezia.org. It is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android.
- Run the installer and click Next on the welcome screen.
- Check the summary and click Install.
- When the installation finishes, open the app and click Let’s get started.
Connect the app to your server
Tell the app how to reach your server over SSH:
- On the Connection screen, choose Self-hosted VPN.
- Server IP address [:port]: enter your server’s public IPv4 address, for example 203.0.113.24. Leave the port empty.
- SSH Username: enter root.
- Password or SSH private key: enter the root password from the email, or paste your private SSH key.
- Click Continue.
The [:port] part is the SSH port used for the installation, not the VPN port. SSH uses the standard port 22 on your server, so enter only the IP address. Everything you type stays on your device; it is used only to connect to your server.
Choose the installation type
Pick how the app should set up the server, then click Continue:
- Automatic installs AmneziaWG 2.0 only: fast and stable even under heavy traffic filtering. Recommended for most people; you can add protocols later.
- Manual installs one protocol of your choice now.
- Skip setup creates an empty connection without changing the server. Use it only if Amnezia is already installed there.
The app installs Docker and the protocol on the server, which takes up to five minutes. When it finishes, a ready connection appears: switch the large button on to connect.
Manage protocols and services
Open the connection in the app to manage your server. From there you can:
- Manage VPN users and their access keys.
- Add or remove protocols: AmneziaWG, WireGuard, OpenVPN, Cloak, Shadowsocks, XRay and IPsec.
- Install a SOCKS5 proxy on the server.
- Set a custom DNS server.
- Deploy an SFTP service for file storage.
- Host a site on the Tor network.
Share access with other devices
To let another device or person use the VPN, open the connection, tap the share icon and create an access key or a configuration file for them.
Create a separate key for each person, so you can remove one without affecting the others. The amnezia.org documentation explains every sharing option.
If the installation times out
If the installation stops with “Timeout connecting to server”:
- Check that the port in the first field is empty (SSH uses port 22).
- Make sure your current network allows outgoing SSH connections to the server.
- On restrictive networks, such as public Wi-Fi or some mobile operators, the long SSH session can be cut off. Try again from another network.
If the VPN stays on “Connecting…”
When the installation succeeds but the VPN never connects, the network between you and the server is almost always blocking or slowing UDP traffic to the VPN port.
Install another protocol from the app, such as XRay, Cloak or Shadowsocks. They disguise VPN traffic as ordinary HTTPS and work even when AmneziaWG is blocked. The amnezia.org documentation has more detailed network checks.
